You may not want to judge a book by its cover, but maybe a LBWer based on his daily work, interests, or profession. This evening session in the hall is the opportunity to brag about some unique skill you have, a surprising job duty, some weird network protocol you regularly maintain, or a piece of hardware the Kids of Today™ have no clue about. Serving some useful purpose is explicitly not a selection criteria. Each session is approximately 20 minutes or as long as you need. Do we need a CfO (call of obscurities) or should we do this based on ad-hoc swarm intelligence? A ceiling projector is seen mounted on main Room ceiling. We will start after the Potd or at 7pm, whichever is later (probably the Potd). (Nils not be able to confirm physical attend LBW2024 as we write so David posting this instead)

Linux is embedded into many of the devices around us, running on a wide range of hardware, mostly ARM, but also x86, RISC-V and others architectures. Each device has its own requirements and constraints. To cope with this diversity, we need tools to build the operating system and fundamental applications. Yocto Project is the tool most often used. Here, I will give you an introduction to Yocto Project, using the Raspberry Pi as an example target. I will talk about Bitbake and Bitbake recipes and I will show how recipes can be gathered together into layers, with demos of each stage. I will finish off with a comparison between a Yocto derived OS and the more commonly used Raspberry Pi OS. I will identify the cases where you would want to use the one over the other

Today, Linux is woven into the fabric of our technology. Yet it was never intended to be used beyond desktop and server PCs. A lot of things had to happen before Linux could break out of the PC environment and make its way in the world as a jobbing jack-of-all-trades. This talk describes some of the key milestones and the people behind them

Friday - August 9, 2024

Hadrian's Wall is only 50 km from the hall (80 km by car). I've checked the timetables and it is feasible to do it by public transport, but the schedule is tight. So, if there are some cars with free seats, it might be more relaxed. Bus from the hall 8:04 - Pentrith 8:36 Penrith 8:56 - Carlisle 9:11 (return ticket 25.5 GBP) Carlisle 9:22 - Haltwhistle 9:54 Haltwhistle 9:59 - bus along the wall https://www.gonortheast.co.uk/services/GNE/AD12 I'd take the bus to Milecastle Inn or Once/Twice Brewed and walk eastwards as far as you can, or to Housesteads Roman Fort (10:27), and walk westwards towards Haltwistle. If we miss the bus, then start the walk from the station (+4 km). The bus route is parallel to the wall, (1 km far) and there are numerous bus stops along the way so it is easy to end the walk where you have enough. https://mapy.cz/s/mekedusote 14 km, maximum is 21 if walking form/to Brocolitia Fort. Last bus from Brocolitia Fort 16:51 - Housesteads 16:59 - Haltwhistle 17:28 Haltwhistle 17:45 - Carlisle 18:17 Carlisle 18:34 - Penrith 18:48 Penrith 19:05 - Hall 19:39 (the last bus)

Start: Aug. 9, 2024, 10 a.m.
End: Aug. 9, 2024, 5 p.m.
